Ecological engineering of photogranulation for biotechnological applications

Cyanobacteria play a major role in biogeochemical cycles on Earth. They may also become prominent actors in biotechnological processes like wastewater treatment by using their capacity to form oxygenic photogranules (OPGs). In our lab, we work on favoring photogranulation through the engineering of ecological boundary conditions, e.g., community structure in inocula or light and nutrient availability. In a coupled approach of experiments and mathematical modeling, we develop a predictive understanding of the interactions during photogranulation.
